On April 25, 2017 in Lakeland at the Florida Skills State Conference, Olivia Bruening, a Senior at River Oak Technical College in Live Oak Florida, won 1st place in the Masonry Contest. Olivia competed with 14 of the best secondary masonry students in Florida and won 1st Place! Olivia will represent Florida at Skills USA In Louisville on June 22nd. Olivia has been competing in the FMAEF Masonry Showcase in Starke Florida for the last two years. In February, Olivia was part of the River Oak Technical College Masonry Team that finished 3rd out of seven schools competing. Olivia scored the highest points for her team and advanced to the Florida Skills State Masonry Contest. Olivia has outstanding masonry skills and she has been recognized by her school and the school board, as well as the masonry industry in Florida, for her hard work in masonry. The categories for the 2017 Masonry Excellence Awards Program will follow the same format as last year, as part of our partnership with the AIA of Florida, we are awarding honors in three main categories:
An overall winner from each of the main categories, as well as one Project of the Year will be featured in a supplemental publication going to all 4400 AIA Florida member architects in the state. Participating were 34 competitors from six different schools, including five girls and five boys representing Menendez. Also on hand were nine tenders assisting the Menendez competitors. Each competitor was tasked with building his or her own brick wall according to specifications required by the judges. Menendez was the only school to bring an all-girls team into competition. From the girls team, Kaylee Folckemer, I’Leisha Smith and Sydney George will be advancing to next month’s state competition. The boys qualifying for state competition are Tommy Mouse, Jonathan Looney and Ethan Stewart. Students will travel to Lakeland in April to compete against others from across the state at the SkillsUSA State Conference. Louisville, KY. – Companies and organizations of the masonry industry joined together to support the 51st annual SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference and the National Masonry Contest on June 25, 2015. After being held in Kansas City, Missouri for decades, the SkillsUSA Conference has returned to the Bluegrass state where it will be held for the next several years. The 43 young masons from 32 states were allotted a maximum of six hours to construct a project composed of brick and block, set on a concrete block base. Each contestant received a detailed drawing to which they were expected to adhere to closely. The 2015 winner of the secondary/high school division of the competition was Luke Dutton from West Rowan High School in Mount Ulla, North Carolina. The winner of the post-secondary/college division was Alex Ossowski from Central Cabarrus High School in Concord, North Carolina. Congrats to North Carolina. The masonry programs or schools of each first-place winner received a $1,500 scholarship from Spec Mix. All six medal winners (three in each division) were awarded tools from Bon Tool and the Marshalltown Company, I-Pads, construction calculators, Lowes & Carhartt vouchers, as well as various other items donated by loyal supporters and sponsors of this event. The Masonry Excellence Awards are the celebration of the art and craftsmanship of the mason, the innovation of the contractor and architect and the endurance of masonry materials produced here in Florida.
Projects submitted were reviewed and judged anonymously by a distinguished jury of masonry and design professionals. Consideration was given to the overall design and use of masonry, as well as the technical aspects of each project. A field of 187 craft trainees competed for top honors in 15 competitions representing 12 crafts, including a new masonry competition and new team competition with journey-level craft professionals from five different crafts working to complete a joint project. Competitors first took an intense, two-hour written exam and then competed in daylong hands-on practical performance tests in: carpentry, electrical-industrial, electrical-residential, fire sprinkler, HVAC, instrumentation fitting, insulation, millwright, pipefitting, plumbing, sheet metal, welding-pipe, welding-structural and masonry.
